I was at the airport this morning and attended the press conference. I
manage to grab a press kit. The schedule showed the fights arriving
from
GLA @ 14:50
MAN @ 15:10
STN @ 16:30
Departing YHM to
GLA @ 20:00
MAN @ 20:30
GLA @ 20:30
All of the other flights from the other destination to YHM are arriving
between 16:00 and 16:40. Return flights depart YHM between 20:00 and
20:35. I sure this is subject to change. This works out to 21 flights a
week and with a B757 it works out to 3,969 seats available per week or
206,000 per year.
James Whyte the president of Globespan Canada stated that this is the
type of airport they and there regular passengers expect. Their model
is to use smaller airport regional airports to save time and money. The
schedule says at the top in large letters "flyglobespan toronto fight
schedule" and then in smaller print just above the schedule it's
self it says "TORONTO HAMILTON - YHM". This is similar to them
advertising London as "London - Stansted". He stated they expect
about 2/3 of the passengers to originate in Great Britain.
They will allow connections on their schedule in Europe and he alluded
to the fact that they are looking into code sharing in Canada and
mentioned code sharing with WestJet. Quote from the press release
"Currently flyglobespan offers a choice of over 75 routes from the UK
on their network encompassing destinations as exciting and diverse as
Boston, Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, Barbados and Cape Town. Europe's
sun spots and cities are well served for with many flights operating on
a Daily basis."
Mr Whyte also expects other European low cost carriers to notice and
come to YHM to save time and money. He noted that during the past
months problems in Great Britain that the secondary airports had hardly
any cancellation and only minor delays.
I asked Mr Whyte about what aircraft they will be using and he stated
that they will start with the B757-200 but switch to B767-300 for the
peak of the season.
Richard Koroscil, president of YHM stated that they are actively
looking for an operator for a duty free operation and there are more
restaurants and shops going in. I asked Richard about the international
area expansion and he stated the hold up was Canada Customs signing off
on the project. The project will include renovations to the existing
building including a new floor and walls. He expects it to start soon.
Talking to other staff I know there, they are looking at other work
including pushing the departure area and the departure baggage area out
in to the ramp more and pushing out the check in area to the west to
add more counter space.
