As I understand it, the Jaguar was essentially a Panther with a larger
color palette and rudimentary 3D, as well as the larger bus. It has
often been commented that the Jaguar (as wel las the Saturn) had very
powerful 2D hardware. Problem is, developers were very quickly moving
away from 2D games at the time.
As for whether or not the Jaguar sucked - I still think it was pretty
great, but it was clearly held back by a lack of quality software
(something Atari only made worse) and some significant design flaws
(bugs in the custom chips, buffers too small, etc).
